Quintessence is about feeding on the energy of others around you in social situations. It details the duality of internal depression, self-doubt and negative tendencies that force you to stay at home and become a recluse, yet also longing for a life beyond your own walls. The core concept of the song is about breaking those boundaries and pushing yourself beyond your own limits, getting caught up in the highs of life, spending time with other people and acclimatising their energy like a social vampire of sorts. The more you spend time with others and feed off of their social energy, the more your ignore your own problems, but you only become more addicted to the Quintessence of others as a natural high to keep your depression at bay. This desperation to stay on top is expressed in the fast-paced guitars, synths and vocals, with heavy drums, dark guitars and bass in later parts of the song to invoke the ever-present depression looming in the back of our minds should we ever slow down.
